What are pros and cons for earning a master’s degree in China? Is China a good choice, or is it better to study in western countries?

Hello!

My name is Clara and I am a former student of the University of Nottingham Ningbo. I am also considering studying a master in China based on the education and lifestyle that I had during my stay. I will share my experience and reasons why I want to pursue further education in China

First of all, I believe that if you choose to do a master in China you need to get plenty of information on universities. Do some research and ask for students opinions of the different universities that offer the course you are looking for. In my case, I believe Nottingham can be one of your top choices as it is an english based university and offers a wide variety of programmes, with many practice hours and outstanding facilities. I was an undergraduate on International Communications and the university had many resources, from online articles on the library to audio-visual classrooms to analyze different media products.

As my university was very centered on the intercultural experience, there were many students and teachers from different parts of the world. The undergraduates were also given the opportunity to study abroad and in some courses, spend two of the four years in another campus. For masters it works the same way

I would say that doing a master in China is probably a good choice, especially in the areas of engineering and science. Maybe Humanities and Social Science can be a worst choice, but it can still be reasonable. My experience was Ningbo so I can only talk about my student life in the Zheijiang city. I would say that this type of cities are nice as long as you get to know people. At the end of the day, the fun comes along with friends. If you are able to get a group of chinese friends, you will have a blast. There are many nice activities to do with friends like karaokes, amusement parks, museums, trips… But if your plan is to move alone to a city and rent a flat, I would highly recommend choosing a University in Shanghai. The city is big but offers comfort to strangers, there are some western food places and coffee shops, so you won’t feel like a complete outcast the first days. It is always nice to have some familiar places around. I also believe that it might be easier to get to know people there. But if your plan is to live inside a campus, I would say that it’s more benefitial to live on a smaller city like in this case, Ningbo

I would not say there are too many cons. There are some problems you won’t find in western uniersities for sure, for example language or cultural shock but I believe it’s worth it. China tends to be a scary destination to foreigners and I still have not figured why. There is going to be moments of struggle but as long as you keep an open mind it will be okay. Most of the problems that people complain about and decide to avoid China can be easily resolved, “There is an internet ban” Well, you buy a vpn and will be able to use your social network, “They are communists” Many countries in europe now have very radical political parties in power like Poland or Hungry and it makes no difference, people still go to Varsovia or Budapest. Plus, your experience won’t be affected by its political inquires. You will have to follow some basic norms but this can apply anywhere. “China is dirty and dangerous” China is actually a very safe country as there are cameras all around. People don’t tend to be violent. And dirty, well depends in where you are at. If you travel to rural places, it might be, but this can also happen in many other places, some italian cities are famous for its dirty streets

However, I do agree that the language can be a important factor. Learning mandarin it’s hard and chinese locals do not understand English, generally speaking. However, I feel like memorizing some basic names and numbers can’t be that hard and will save you in some situations. If you insist on avoiding mandarin, there are always translators apps

I feel like China can be a smart destinty, plus you will enjoy traveling around China and some other places in Asia. Give it a chance.
